Sometimes words are just not enough.
Sometimes thinking about something, puzzling through it, imagining into a future we cannot see, just isn’t what is helpful. Just often makes things worse.
And yet, being embodied, being in the body that is full of uncomfortable sensations we recognize as emotions and unprocessed traumatic memories just pulsing through us implicitly is like…not very fun. Is not nearly as accessible or just possible sometimes. Is just too much.
Especially during times of extreme stress. Especially in times of extreme fear. Especially in times that are hard, terrifying, exhausting, heartbreaking, all the things all at once.
This everything, everywhere, all at once type of energy can put us into a functional freeze state whereby we find ourselves dooms scrolling for hours, bed rotting, dissociating, numbing, escaping, in a way that doesn’t actually get the activating energy out of our bodies so we can truly reset, rest and move forward with more access to our Self Energy.
So what the hell do we do?
How the hell do we stay in our integrity?
How in the world do we take care of ourselves?
How can we work with the emotions at all in a way that isn’t overwhelming?
Well my friends, I have found an answer. An answer from the past. An answer from the gay gods and femme fantastic queen goddesses full of powerful pizazz. An answer that has supported me, lifted my spirits, moved my energy and got me through to the next moment many times before. Truly for nearly three decades. It’s very reliable.
The medicine, solution, opportunity, resource I am speaking about folks is the iconic, the legendary, the unbeatable Spice Girls. Truly.
Girl Power is the power that fuels!!!
Girly Pop gives all the good feels!!!
Believe in its magic!!
Plug into its source!!
The Spice Girls want you to thrive!!
They want us all to thrive!!
This is the real good word.
To STOP.
AND DANCE BABY.
Or at least that’s what I did one night at home not too long after returning to the states from Scotland for the first time. It was a big transition after being gone and not seeing clients for six weeks. A big landing into the new year. Into the new administration. Into a new relationship. Into the age of Pluto in Aquarius. Into my Star Card year - my 35th year of living on this crazy planet we call Earth. A “back to life, back to reality” moment for sure that was rough.
When my system feels taxed like that. When it feels full or frayed or like it’s stuck in a buzzing anxious, yet also depressed sort of feeling, that’s when I know it’s time to dance. Dance to something god damn it. Anything really. But god am I so happy that I put on the Spice Girls.
One of my favorite songs is Who Do You Think You Are. I’ve danced to it many many times for fun and for performances. This time, as seen in the video above, I was channeling a few things:
My Girl Pop Self aka the little girl fun playful sassy energy that does live within all of us regardless of gender identity or expression.
My beloved friend from No Mirror Movement, JT aka JT-Yonce, who passed at the age of 36 in 2022. He is a FIERCE dancer and was the first person to really introduce me to lip syncing and really, drag.
My drag persona who will be debuting publicly NEXT WEEK - Sly Saturn: The Dancing King. His name is inspired by Sylvester, the legendary gender bending disco star who rose to stardom from his fanbase in San Francisco in the 70’s. And the planet Saturn - the Daddy planet, for a cosmic masculine spin. A planet that very much rules my chart as someone with nine placements in Capricorn and Aquarius (both signs ruled by Saturn).
The power of the objects behind me in my dance space - The Lesbian Flag, a “My Heart is in The Highlands” poster, and my Venus altar.
My absolute disdain for Trump, Elon Musk, and all folks in power and who uphold those in power working to target, erase, villainize and hurt trans people, poor people, disabled people, black people, immigrants, gay people, women - all of us who are not white straight and a cis man (with money).
The song Who Do You Think You Are is a sassy clap back to those assholes who are making all of our lives so much harder and with absolutely no shame. Who Do You Think You Are, if translated into New Yorker would mean “Who the fuck do you think you are buddy? Who the fuck do you think you are to act like that? To treat people like that? To think you’re so special and awesome? Fuck off and fuck you.”
The Spice Girls spoke through my body in this dance video as an outlet for my rage about the current (and long building) circumstance in the USA and around the world. but it was even more fun and different because it was a rage that was gay. That was fun. That was still strong and clear, but also femme, flirty and silly. This sort of dynamism felt in the body when processing hard emotions feels like a special cheat code of sorts I hope you find your way into, obviously through the Spice Girls, but really any medium of music that works for you and your unique MindBodySpirit System.
The magic Spotify shuffle gods then transitioned right into another Spice Girls song “Say You’ll Be There”. A CLASSIC. Such a FEEL GOOD anthem all about the importance of building relationships. Of showing up. This gift of a song was helping me process the beginning of a new love, not too long after a devastating end to a previous one. It was helping me celebrate this new feeling and excitement, as well as reminding me of the importance of relationships in and of themself. Of doing Heart Work.
I am hearing so many people talk about this the further we get into 2025, trump, et. all. People matter. You matter. We matter. Being together matters. Building one another up matters. Opening our hearts matters. Love matters. Connection is everything.
Still.
When I was dancing to the Spice Girls, I was accessing multiple kinds of Self Energy:
Connection - connection to the music, to my body, to my body.
Courage - to move, to dance, to face a camera and express myself fully and freely.
Clarity - the lyrics to the songs helped me reach clarity about the feelings I was experiencing and what is important to me and how I want to response, move forward.
Creativity - this one is pretty self explanatory. Choosing how I respond to the music, the moves I engage in, and the authentic self expression of dance that is always inherent, especially when freestyling!
Confidence - the Spice Girls really help me access this feeling. That is what they are all about. GIRL POWER. And girly pop power is CONFIDENT. ASSURED. EXPRESSED.
So the next time you are doom scrolling or frozen or overwhelmed by the dumpster fire of feelings elicited from a dumpster fire time, see if you can find your way over to the World of Spice Girls to move some energy and reconnect to your Self. Even better if you allow yourself to channel the power of Drag - of performance, of exaggeration, of PLAY, of gender bending, and of LIP SYNC MY LOVES.
Now is the time to lip sync for our lives!!
The more of us rooting into the power of this creative expression, the stronger our movement (in our bodies and collectively) will be.
(Girl) Power to the People Forever!!!
With love,
Lucky
